Bone Broth Benefits
Bouillon cubes or ready-made broths are commonly used for soups and other cooking. But do you know how they are made and how many natural benefits are provided to your health or natural beauty when consumed regularly?
The phenomenal element found in bone broth is collagen which is drawn from the bones and connective tissue when boiled. All the health benefits are lost if it’s not made with real bones.
Collagen is a protein found throughout the body in muscles, bones, joints, blood, skin and the gut. It plays a role in replenishing dead cells and determines the quality of the new cells that form. Cells grow healthier when there is abundant collagen at their disposal.
Natural collagen production in our bodies slows down with age. It also depreciates
due to bad lifestyle and diet choices such as eating too much sugar. This is what causes are skin to lose its strength and elasticity and we develop wrinkles.
Supplementing with dietary collagen such as bone broth will enable your skin to regenerate cells the way it did in your youth. This means less wrinkles, more natural glow. Making your Own Bone Broth
Most bouillon cubes are full of chemicals and may not be made using real bones. I recommend making your own or buying fresh ready-made broth. Always check the ingredients to make sure it’s made with real produce and not artificial flavourants. It should contain only a few ingredients and you should be able to easily recognise what all of them are.
There are many different ways to make bone broth. Below is a good one to start with and to get your palate used to the taste — it’s not terrible at all!
I love the flavor of rosemary so I always add a few fresh sprigs when I make it with beef or lamb bones. You can swap this out for any of your favorite herbs.
I always try to use the highest grade of produce that I can found such as bones from grass-fed cows, and organic vegetables and herbs. There’s an organic market in my area once a week but if you don’t know of one, Google ‘organic produce’ and your area. There are more and more organic suppliers popping up all over these days.
I always like to roast the bones before making the broth because it adds a deeper flavor but you’re welcome to skip this step.
- 1kg (2.2lbs) beef bones (it’s ok if there is a bit of meat or fat on the bones)
- Olive oil
- 2 brown onions
- 3 stalks of celery (with the leaves)
- 4 medium carrots (optional)
- 100g (3.5 ounces) fresh rosemary
- 100g (3.5 ounces) fresh thyme
- 2 TBSP organic apple cider vinegar
- 2-3 litres (8-12 cups) purified water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 140ºC (280℉)
- Spread the bones over a roast pan
- Coat lightly with olive oil on all sides
- Roast bones for an hour (flip over halfway)
- Roughly cut vegetables (you can leave peels on)
- Place bones, vegetables and herbs in a large pot or slow cooker
- Add water to fill the rest of the pot with some boiling space
- Season and add apple cider vinegar
- Stove top: Cover, bring to the boil and simmer for 3 hours
Slow cooker: Cook on low heat for 12-24 hours
- Let it cool (this takes some time!)
- Strain the broth and discard the bones and vegetables
- Can be store for 4 days in an airtight container in the fridge.
- Heat up as you need it.
- Freeze for up to 2 months.
I sip my bone broth as it is out of a large mug daily but it makes a base for a delicious buddha bowl. Just add protein and fresh, crunchy vegetables of your choice.
Alternates to Making your Own Bone Broth
If you don’t have the time or desire to make bone broth from scratch there are ready-made options. I suggest a high quality organic broth made from grass-fed beef and lamb or free-range chickens such as:
